Good Things for Kids With Valentines Day occurring this week, I thought it would be fun to share with you some quotes from a book called Hugs for Teachers. Though we often think of students remembering the academic side of their time with a given teacher, the reality is that teachers never know what each of their students will remember. It can be the tiniest of things that can make the most lasting impression. The following are some gems from “Hugs for Teachers”: “My teacher is sweet. And she loves frogs. We call her the frog-lady. And she is the one that I love best. She also looks like my grandmother.” Raymond, age 9 “My favorite teacher is Mrs. Calloway. She is sooo nice! She has poofy hair and wasn’t like a teacher. She was like an ordinary person. She was funny, loving, caring, and always had something nice to say.” Erin, age 10 “My favorite teacher is Mrs. Jolles because she is very strict. If she wasn’t I would probably have no manners or anything like that. And she teaches me other work.” Jon, age 10 I still chuckle when I remember teaching about Africa to 6th graders many years ago. While writing an imaginary journal about visiting Africa, a student wrote that he had gone to Africa to see the “loins.” One can often hear teachers in the BACS Teachers’ Lounge sharing little comments, made by one student or another, that touched the heart or brought a chuckle. These conversations often end with the teachers acknowledging that these little moments of delight are the treasures of teaching. They inspire teachers and warm the heart, especially through the cold days of winter. GMS |
