Text Box: Picture Retake Day is Wed Nov. 14th
If, for any reason, you were dissatisfied with your child’s picture package, all you have to do is return the complete package (KEEP only the composite class group), and they may get their picture retaken on Wednesday, November 14.
For planning purposes, it would be helpful to have the packages returned by Tuesday, Nov. 13. This will give me an idea of how many students to expect. Also, if your child was absent on the original picture day, you may order packages at this time. Just realize that absent children can’t be put into the group picture.
Feel free to contact Steve Irwin, Picture Day Coordinator.

Text Box: We like to recycle and the BACS art classes could use your trash!
Specifically we would like:
8oz. (or larger) empty water bottles

Text Box: Car Pick-Up
Please remember that big vans and SUVs waiting to pick up children from the Society Building lot should use parking spaces as far away from the building as possible. They block the view of anybody searching the lot for smaller vehicles.

Good Things for Kids

I recently read an article in a local newspaper entitled “How to prepare your student to be a class act.”  Many of the points in the article resonated with my experience of what children need.  One recommendation was to encourage kids to be independent problem solvers.  “If parents are ready to solve the slightest problem for their children, from tying their shoes to cleaning up spilled juice, their kids will not be willing to complete projects at school.  Instead of jumping in to help, praise your child when he or she solves a difficulty on his or her own.  It is also good to “teach your children how to break down big jobs into small steps. A student who can separate cleaning her room into laundry, bed making, and dusting will be adept at handling projects, such as book reports and science posters, in the classroom later on.”

In the busy world of today, it is often easier and quicker to do things for children rather than let them do it themselves.  Yet, important life skills can be learned through such things as self-effort at problem solving and the doing of household chores.  Allowing time for this process is important.  Though some struggle might be involved, there can also develop a sense of competency and an affection for doing.

In his Conversations on Education, William Benade says, “Doing is use, and use is life. The child that finds delight in doing, unconsciously regards this delight as something provided. . . . In this plane of feeling there may be implanted by the angels, gratitude . . .”

Yes, even if it takes some struggle along the way, eventually children will be grateful for being taught how be problem solvers and good workers.
